Questions log

Q: We are part of multiple groups that have homepages? Which homepage becomes the main one in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: You can assign a “priority” to each group in C11. The higher priority will take precedence.

Q: Are there tooltips for visuals in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Yes, move your mouse over each visualization.

Q: What are the options in Cognos Analytics R5 to make the dashboard Accessible?
A: C11 is certified as Accessible, if the charts do not provide enough flexibility, you can change the colors or convert them to crosstabs or grid, which display the actual values. Plus, all new features were developed with Accessibility in mind.

Q: Can we customize colors in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: A variety of palettes are available in C11. The ability to define custom palettes is planned for a future release.

Q: Installing Cognos Analytics on top hasn’t worked for us, each release has some new settings or configuration changes. Do you have any suggestions to improve this?
A: We have specifically designed Cognos Analytics to install over top of previous releases. All customers who have moved to C11 are indeed installing over top, as it was designed. If this does not work for you, please contact IBM Customer Support and we will be happy to look at your issues.

Q: Can we use a drill through option in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Yes, drill through is still available in the reporting tool.

Q: Can we sort data in a dashboard by a measure in Cognos Analytic R5? For example, we’d like to sort sales by product line by sales, descending.
A: In a dashboard, you can sort on a measure. There is a known defect in R5 that prevents the on-demand toolbar from appearing when there is a series defined (in the color slot).

Q: What was done in Cognos Analytics R5 to setup the Year -> Quarter -> Month drill up/down? Does it pick the Date/Time attributes automatically and build them?
A: This was done using Navigation Paths. You can use the Data Module tool to define the navigation paths that you want to present to your user. You can also define attribute types as well. Date, geo, measure, etc. are options.

Q: Is it possible to show a current navigation path on a chart in a form of breadcrumb in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: The current state of the navigation and filters are displayed as part of the filter icon on the top right of the widget

Q: Are ERSI maps available in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: IBM and ESRI are working together to make them available in a future release of Cognos.

Q: Are new maps available in Report Studio in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: The new map visualization is currently only available in the dashboard.

Q: Are counties and cities available for free in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Countries and states/provinces are the only boundaries that are supported in C11. Here is a link to the regions that are supported in C11: https://watson.analytics.ibmcloud.com/docs/help/#wa_an_overview/wa_an_hlp_viz_types_map.html. There will be much more to come in future releases.

Q: Can we customize the tooltips in maps in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Not currently. This may be possible in R6.

Q: Do visualizations need to be separately downloaded and installed in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Rave2 visualizations are installed with the software. Legacy visualizations will need to be downloaded.

Q: Can a share or embed be filtered based on a parameter passed through a URL in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Parameter values can be passed into a report via the embed and sharing URL.

Q: Are there any new features or changes to how Cubes/MDC files are accessed/analyzed in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: There are no changes in R5.

Q: Can I still use Cubes in reporting in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Of course.

Q: Is it possible to abbreviate a number in Cognos Analytics R5? For example, 4.6B.
A: Yes, abbreviation is available in dashboarding. Click on any axis or column header and select the format option.

Q: Are TM1 based Framework Manager packages available to be used in dashboards in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: Only relational packages is available in R5, OLAP is coming soon though.

Q: How are users verified for embedded content in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: C11 will use your existing licenses. A single sign can be used to authenticate access, C11 will prompt you to log in or use SSO.

Q: When do you expect product documentation for Cognos Analytics R5 to be available?
A: Documentation is updated with every release and posted to the IBM Knowledge Center: http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSEP7J_11.0.0/com.ibm.swg.ba.cognos.cbi.doc/welcome.html.

Q: Is there any documentation for mash-up services? We are unable to rollout Cognos Analytics until we can get smashup services working.
A: Cognos mashup services have not changed since Cognos BI 10.2.2. It provides access to the same content as before, but not the new content such as dashboarding.

Q: Cognos Analytics R5 lacks documentation for SDK and mash-up services. Esri’s EM4C doesn’t support C11. When do you expect the actual production release of C11 to occur?
A: The SDK has not been updated to reflect the new services and capabilities of C11. The Cognos BI 10.2.2 documentation is still accurate.

Q: Where do I find widgets and how can I create them?
A: Custom widgets are up to you to define. Here is a link to the the IBM Knowledge Center to get more information: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/.

A: You create them by zipping up your JSON files. If you install the samples, you can take a look at some of them for reference.

A: Maps are not available for Active Reports yet, only dashboards today.

Q: Can I click through the storyboard rather than set all automation up on timing? It would help with flexibility when I’m presenting content.
A: Yes, you need to click on “Next Scene” to advance.

Q: Regarding Cognos Workspace, Analysis Studio and Query Studio content, I’ve been told that it will upgrade, but if I want to make changes, they should be recreated/deployed in new tools?
A: No, these assets will be available in Cognos Analytics R5 as well. The studios are hidden by default, but your admin can make them available for you to open, modify and create new ones.

Q: What support is available for Spark drivers in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: C11 does not support Spark, we are evaluating these capabilities. Please vote them on the RFE: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=86127.

A: Yes, the webinar recording is available at: //senturus.com/resources/whats-new-in-cognos-analytics-11-0-5/.

Q: Can I combine provinces in a map in Cognos Analytics R5?
A: You can form custom groups using the data module where, for example, two provinces could be combined into a single entry. Having the ability to define these groups on the fly in the dashboard is on the roadmap, no timelines quite yet as to when they will be available.

Q: Can I highlight certain bars in a map based on the data in Cognos Analytics R5?

Q: Do I need an internet connection for MapBox to fully function in Cognos Analytics R5? What if there is not a connection to MapBox?
A: Yes, the browser needs access to the internet. If you do not have access to the internet (and therefore Mapbox), you will see an error message. The legacy maps are still available to use, which do not require an internet connection.

Q: What’s the oldest IBM Cognos Connection version Cognos Analytics will work with?
